Hi! My name is Mary Duncan and I’m a Black American artist who started teaching myself how to paint in 2000. I live in Western Massachusetts. I…and my art…are works in progress!

I want my art to reflect how I’ve been able to cope with my feelings of inadequacies with my outer appearance; to see what makes my heart beat…and sometimes ache. I know the positive healing art provides for me and know that it can do the same for others.

After many years of desiring to pursue the arts, I took the plunge and moved to New York City after being accepted (at 52 years of age) to Pratt Institute Manhattan. Due to COVID-19, I have taken a one-year leave of absence, since art classes are being offered virtually and I enjoy the in-person experience a lot more.

My major influences are childhood toys and animation from the 60’s and 70’s, fashion, NYC and favorite books…like Alice in Wonderland. Some of my favorite artists are Frans Hals, Claude Monet and Jean Michel Basquiat, with my favorite museum being the Metropolitan Museum of art. I enjoy combining my influences with my Black American heritage.
